The fascinating thing about beginnings is that you can usually only identify them in hindsight. Often, it is not a specific point in time, but rather something that comes together like a puzzle over the course of years. On 11 July 1922, after a 10-year lease, Maria ( born Ebster) and Franz Pfister (Hoadacher) purchased the Märzenklamm inn – popularly known as Blattl – on the März from the landowner Josef Zimmermann for five million crowns. It was a traditional country inn where locals came and went to discuss politics and economics over beer and wine. Around 1927, the Zillertal experienced its first boom as a tourist destination in the summer.
Summer visitors came from the cities. The opportunity presented by tourism was recognised early on and the first rooms were rented out. Postcards with a view of the inn were printed for advertising purposes and newspaper advertisements were placed. There is evidence of this from 1932. At that time, an overnight stay with full board cost 6.00 schillings per bed. Franz was also a trained master carpenter and renovated the house with great attention to detail.
However, the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 brought a setback. The continued hardship of the post-war period, combined with great effort and worry, meant that accommodation was out of the question. Despite the economic consequences and the loss of one of their three children in the war, they never gave up hope for a better future.
